Tore UP, man
Tuesday, 27 May 2008 21:42Everyone has been sending me well wishes via text message, email, and IM today, followed by "let me know how it went." I'm about to tell you how it went.
I plotted my bus trek a couple of days ago. It's pretty easy -- one bus gets me to the park & ride, where I walk over to the 128th Street ramp overpass of I-405. Bus takes me to the Bellevue transit center and I walk about 15-20 minutes to the office. I can do that, right? I walk that distance to the grocery store all the time.
I get to the park & ride and think "oh, hey, if I get off ON the overpass all I'll have to do is cross the street and I'll be at my next stop. What a clever girl am I!" I get off at the next stop to discover that there are crosswalks for all the other intersections BUT the one I want to cross. I had to cross the street three times in order to cross the intersection. Bah!
The bus ride to Bellevue was very, very short. Maybe ten minutes (maybe). I got off the bus and headed to 112th Ave SE for my walk. I was prepared -- I had printed out a map of my walking route and thought I had it marked appropriately -- but I overshot a crucial turn and ended up walking about 2500 feet past the office. By the time I realized I was lost my feet were killing me. I activated the bat-signal for help, and Amy pointed me in the right direction. I backtracked those 2000 feet and then some, arriving at the office right at 10 a.m., desperate to sit down.
The day itself was standard as far as first days go. Meet more people, get a desk, check out my work email, read some specs, get familiar with the hardware. This is going to be a huge departure from what I'm accustomed to. The office, when packed, probably has about ten people in it. I was offered all the plain chocolate M&M's I could eat.
I took two buses and walked a chunk on the way in, but the trek home was much easier. Route 342 took me from right outside my building all the way to the I-405/128th Street overpass, where I hopped off one bus and got on another one home. Why didn't I find route 342 on the way in? Because its last morning run is at 7:30 a.m. I wasn't going to bother leaving the house until 8:30.
Those M&M's caught up with me. I got home, fed the cat, fed myself, logged on to the computer, then hobbled out to the living room where I passed out on the sofa for two hours. That's what I get for watching my TiVo'd episode of Good Eats. I love the heck out of Alton Brown, but even new episodes will knock me out faster than Country Music Television, no matter how much I want to learn about Dutch ovens. I woke up to the whiny cockiness that is Bobby Flay. My feet still hurt.
Tomorrow I get to do it all over again, this time without getting lost. I may even take my bike.
