The Comet Tavern - June 26 show
Monday, 28 June 2010 01:07The good: Great bands to play with (if I do say so myself, since I brought them in on this bill), great location, smack dab in the middle of the Pride Weekend block party where passersby could stop and watch us through the windows, I sold some CDs and magnets, signed some autographs (!!!), AWESOME sets from everyone, and an easy-to-work-with sound guy who knew his stuff. People I didn't know took pictures of us with their cameras and cel phones -- if they post them online, I only hope I don't look bovine like I usually do.
The bad: With a 3:30 load time, we were told when we booked the show that music was to start at 4:30. Music ended up starting at 4 and we were each given 30 minutes to play. If anyone planning to attend the show was running late or aiming to arrive at the advertised time they ended up missing the first band entirely. We ended up finishing all three sets and completely tearing down by 6:15.
When your appeal to a venue is all about draw things like this don't help. They happen all the time, though. Booking reps don't book a new band with the intention of making them fail, but they do give them time slots that are difficult to draw an audience. If your band sucks that's one thing, but if you have no friends... that's a big problem. The music scene thrives on friends.
I absolutely LOVED playing The Comet. Yeah, the surprise schedule change was disappointing, but we all made the most of it and got the attention of people on the street as well as those who paid their cover to get inside. The sound guy wasn't a dick (he was very cool), and it was a FUN experience. I would love to play there again, and wrote a day-after email to Mamma Casserole saying so.
Don't miss out on our next show! The people that come to our shows regularly (these are not our families or friends, but people who are actually FANS) say that every time they see us our show gets better, and that's why they keep coming to see us. We have a reputation of being a big katamari of awesome that won't stop!
