The good: Great bands to play with (if I do say so myself, since I brought them in on this bill), great location, smack dab in the middle of the Pride Weekend block party where passersby could stop and watch us through the windows, I sold some CDs and magnets, signed some autographs (!!!), AWESOME sets from everyone, and an easy-to-work-with sound guy who knew his stuff. People I didn't know took pictures of us with their cameras and cel phones -- if they post them online, I only hope I don't look bovine like I usually do.

The bad: With a 3:30 load time, we were told when we booked the show that music was to start at 4:30. Music ended up starting at 4 and we were each given 30 minutes to play. If anyone planning to attend the show was running late or aiming to arrive at the advertised time they ended up missing the first band entirely. We ended up finishing all three sets and completely tearing down by 6:15.

When your appeal to a venue is all about draw things like this don't help. They happen all the time, though. Booking reps don't book a new band with the intention of making them fail, but they do give them time slots that are difficult to draw an audience. If your band sucks that's one thing, but if you have no friends... that's a big problem. The music scene thrives on friends.

I absolutely LOVED playing The Comet. Yeah, the surprise schedule change was disappointing, but we all made the most of it and got the attention of people on the street as well as those who paid their cover to get inside. The sound guy wasn't a dick (he was very cool), and it was a FUN experience. I would love to play there again, and wrote a day-after email to Mamma Casserole saying so.

Don't miss out on our next show! The people that come to our shows regularly (these are not our families or friends, but people who are actually FANS) say that every time they see us our show gets better, and that's why they keep coming to see us. We have a reputation of being a big katamari of awesome that won't stop!

Don't bother telling me you won't be there because I need to stay positive about the show. All the apologies in the world do no good when attendance will make or break our ability to do more of them. It's better to say you'll be there and flake.

Come to my show!

These are the "self portraits" I've been avoiding for a couple of weeks. I plan to make a mold of my favorite face once all the painstaking facial details are done (like eyebrows). With a mold, the hard part becomes super-easy, and all I really have to worry about is hair.

Ugh... hair. Polyform no longer makes Sculpey III color 083, which is a nice cool red perfect for the hair on this project, and I have exactly one brick left. I can make it stretch by mixing it with some colorless clay, but that's it. Once it's gone, it's gone. I wonder if there's a black market for discontinued Sculpey III/Premo colors.

I will add pin backs for these when done and see if they sell at my next show. If they do I'll try a winking variation or something.

Of course, I actually have to get venues to respond to my emails in order to GET shows, and that's not happening. It's frustrating, so please come to my June 26 show. Please.

I got tired of randomly having the sound on my LG enV3 go off when I thought it was turned off (it was) that I returned to my original enV. Better volume control, but I sacrificed the better camera and built-in editing app. I think I'll live. The enV3 had two volumes, loud and off, and off was unpredictable.

Right now I'm at the Urban Coffee Lounge in Kirkland watching my friend Fae Wiedenhoeft perform. She'll play until 9 if you want to stop by. If not for the music, do it for the chocolate rum balls - they're quite decadent.

I only wish I could provide a better picture.

I don't wear jewelry and it doesn't interest me. A lot of people do, though, so I'm making some. There are eight pieces waiting to be listed. Four are shown below. I have a handful of ideas rolling around in my head I want to try but can't seem to remember to write them down! Very frustrating. I like the black cat theme, and hearts can be fun, too. If you wear jewelry, what do you look for? Color? Shape? Topical? Inquiring minds want to know.

The album is officially e-released, but the hard copy won't be sent out until the 15th. If you must, find me on digistation.com to download it. My favorite track is "Dots."

If you see me on Facebook you know by now that my record is right around the corner. I finished the long-overdue artwork, waded through the submission and review process, and am now out $400 that I may or may not ever see again. Of the 100 physical disks I ordered, I will probably actually sell 80 of them -- that alone will allow me to break even. I am hoping that the digital distribution package I also ordered will result in more sales.

It feels odd to think of my music in terms of sales. It feels odd and cheap. I never expected to become famous or make a lot of money doing this, but it sure would be nice to not lose my shirt.

Digital distribution is requiring me to set up a bunch of accounts at CDbaby and a service called DigStation. It is my understanding that everything will also be available on iTunes, but I haven't received any info on that yet. So many things to do, and all of it seems to be happening at once. I know it will be worth it in the long run. I hope the wide net will find new fans all over the place. It will give me reason to keep doing this.

There are only six songs on my record. I would have loved to include more, but my band's crucial players always had something that kept them from making that happen. Ed, aside from being really fucking difficult to get into the studio to record any of MY songs, went broke. Ron and I couldn't see eye to eye on the mixes for the longest time, AND his day job often put the project on the back burner. It was a long and stressful process. I'm happy it's finally done, but also disappointed. A dozen of the songs I have played in public and love but am thoroughly sick of won't reach a wider audience. They had to be sacrificed for newer material and cover tunes.

I think my new recording project is already being scribbled on napkins and post-it notes. Much of it will be new, and the rest will be just archiving -- I feel that there are a number of songs that have fallen off our set list that have some commercial value and still want to shop them around.

So much to do... I need to update MySpace, try to get Troublefakers.com into some kind of presentable form, figure out email, etc.

If you haven't been to a show, come to one. If you have, but it's been a while, come again. We hope to play Bumbershoot 2010 and the Seattle Rock n' Roll Marathon/Half Marathon this year. They should be fun.

Now I just need to pull my head out of my ass and just enjoy the ride and the scenery..

Grady has been more clingy than usual. Wait, that's a lie -- he's always clingy, he's just been more aggressive about it since I started working at the office again instead of from home. I have to beg him to eat. When he doesn't eat, he will beg me for whatever I'm eating. God forbid I have a tortilla chip in my hand, because if I'm not careful I'll pull back a stump.

This morning Grady was given some kibble and fresh water. He turned up his nose at it, then walked over to the sliding glass door to look outside. When I looked over at him a minute later he was licking it. A lot. Grady will also lick the refrigerator, the floor, and any condensation off a standing glass full of iced beverage. I have never seen him lick a window before.

I'm a little concerned at this behavior. Yes, Flea has given Grady quite a bit of stress with his presence alone, but as far as anyone can tell nothing has really become of it. I'm thinking another round of Feliway is in order soon if his odd behavior continues.

+ + + + + + + + + +

In other news, I am downloading the trial version of Microsoft's Songsmith software. There are too many songs in my head that can't wait for me to become a piano virtuoso. Don't let their cheezy infomercial put you off -- the program itself is actually pretty cool.

Mastering the now-SIX song EP... this is what "Dots" looks like. Jake is cleaning up and adding audio color to all the tunes and balancing them out so they sound good together. He is so gracious to set aside time on this crispy Saturday.

Thank you, Jake!

Sunday? No.

Ethan asked me yesterday if I was up for a gig on Sunday. I said sure, the rest of his band said okay, and then he had to quickly throw together a rehearsal. He then said that it would be tonight, and late. Given the series of events that happened this afternoon I don't think I'll be at that show on Sunday. Around 4 he texted me that the garage door wouldn't shut and he had to leave. I called him right back and he was already on the freeway -- why he didn't call me when he realized it wouldn't close I have no idea. I thought I'd have to go home early to fix it, but Ken stepped in. He's one of those people who does the 6 - 3 shift, so he was available. Problem solved.

Ethan wouldn't open the garage if he didn't need something out of it. In this case it was his amplifier. I guess I won't be at any rehearsal. Not that I'm upset, but man... what is it about humans that makes communication so difficult? Grady is better at this than we are, and he speaks NO LANGUAGE KNOWN TO MAN. True facts.

Anyway, the door is fixed, I'm at home, and things are okay. If anyone is interested, Ethan will be playing the early show at The Skylark Cafe this Sunday. I'm not sure if I'll be performing with him or not.

Not unscathed

I could not stay awake at work today, had an esophageal spasm that hurt like a mofo, and developed a obnoxious throat-clearing habit that occasionally becomes a cough. I do have a small fever and my sinuses are questionable. The whole "falling-asleep-at-work" thing turned into "fighting-to-stay-awake-on-the-drive-home," which was scary as fuck. Once I pulled into the garage and turned off the engine I fell asleep in my car for a good ten minutes.

Hopefully this is just "con crud," because that tends to happen when large groups of nerds/geeks/dorks congregate. I will be doing everything in my power to recover no matter what it is, though -- I really don't want to have to cancel my shows this week/weekend.

Anemia

Yeah, it's back. I spent most of today in a fog with a headache because of it.

Grady is fine. Just waiting for the day when he eats more than the pawful of kibble he's flung out of the dish.

I need to contact my producer here soon, get hoppin' on that record. Things are shifting in Troublefaker land and I want to get all-new material set up for the next round of shows.

I'm tired.

I stink

Seriously, I do. I had to run for the bus this morning, then I ended up walking about a mile or so this afternoon to get home. Add the rising heat of the afternoon and a band rehearsal, and I smell like a sack of onions and something else I don't really feel like going into right now.

Let's just say I can tell when I'm ovulating.

Wrote a new song tonight, finished up one we started last week called FOUR STARS ON EXPERT. Donnie's son, Parker, didn't get it. "But the best you can do is FIVE stars, so your song is wrong!" "Ah, young Parker, there's the rub. People who can actually get five stars on expert wouldn't write a song about it. One needs something to look forward to in life." "Oh." Parker is nine (I think).

I'm debating taking a shower before bed. I am that stinky. Yes I am.

Unlike the show at Laughing Ladies Cafe in Shoreline, this is both of us with our separate bands playing our rock/pop sets.

I've been struggling with Facebook's events app since last night trying to get invitations without success. Other invites work properly -- frustrating! If you're on FB, do a search or click this link and invite yourself: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/event.php?eid=113164596954

I colored my hair last night with Ken's help. I've had the supplies for a couple of weeks now and was too chickenshit to follow through. It turned out pretty good. I probably could have left it on five more minutes, though. It still looks like I have roots, but at least the roots are cherry red and not soccer mom brown.

Grady is back from the vet. He was uncharacteristically quiet on the way there and on the way back. They gave him fluids and Pepcid, and will do some bloodwork. I'm out $133. That's without an x-ray. The vet was a good sport about Grady's shitty attitude, and remembered him from our last visit there. He has lost half a pound, but is still overweight.

I do not like PayPal.

I really want to make macaroni and cheese, but it will heat up the house like nobody's business. I'll have to wait until the sun goes down to do this. Damn.

The roasted garlic I made is almost gone. Here's some TMI for you: My bathroom smells like garlic. That's how much garlic was made and consumed in this house over the last 48 hours. We will be vampire-free for a month, guaranteed. I thought for sure the hair dye smell would overwhelm it, but no.

While I feel so much better now that the whateveritis is mostly out of my system, my voice is not up to par. I am having trouble staying on key and I still feel like I have fluid in my throat, making me cough randomly. I hope I'm back to normal by Sunday. As an added bonus, it looks like Ken has caught the whateveritis that knocked me out this week. I hope he doesn't suffer as much as I did. More garlic is in order.

It looks like we've booked another show this month. I can't tell you when or where without risking the crowd numbers for Sunday's Skylark show (because we really really really need people to show up there -- attendance == $$ == a completed album of Just My Stuff), but I will tell you it's soon, it's in a great little place with great food, and it will be easy to get to for all the people out there who complained about where we'd been booked for other shows. If we're lucky, this new show will come with its own draw, and we'll have plenty of audience.

Early this morning I got up to let some cool morning air into the house. This has worked for the last couple of summers, but this year it's a little challenging. To keep Grady out of his room, Ethan keeps the door closed (he's allergic), so that air flow is lost. We'll figure out something. So far I've been able to keep it below 80 inside, even though it doesn't really feel like it's 75-78 inside. Whatever the real temperature is, it's still much cooler than what's going on outside. I have my suspicions regarding this thermostat anyway. It went nuts after Garret moved out and I've been struggling with it ever since.

OMG DID YOU SEE L&O:SVU THIS WEEK? HOLY CRAP! I just caught it on TiVo, and man, I was on the edge of my seat...

That's about it.

After sleeping for 36 hours, I felt pretty good. Then I went out and made myself feel bad again. I'm taking it easy today in preparation of tonight's show, because all that's left is an annoying cough that some hot liquids will probably take care of. I do feel a lot better than I did day before yesterday. I was so beat up I would stop speaking mid-sentence and just stare into space.

Sadly, Troublefaker Barbie will not be ready by tonight. All the time I had budgeted for her this week was sucked up by this cold. She will be available for raffle at a future show.

I'm fine. I seem to be addicted to the Tiger Woods red Gatorade.

Oh, and if you're over on Facebook you need to start playing Bejeweled Blitz. With me. Now.

ETA: Well HELLO THERE LARGE GRAPHIC
I thought about editing it or putting it behind a cut, but... nah.
fatrockstar: (singer)
Ethan followed up on the set we did at Laughing Ladies Cafe this past Saturday, asking if any of the photos they took of us were available for him to use. Amanda, who booked us, sent the following feedback:

You guys were so awesome! Seriously, I have never had such a pull from outside than with you guys. Your voices compliment each other so well.

I am still editing the pics that I got, and trying to salvage some of the sound on the videos. Aaron was asking me about them as well.

Rudy as managed to get a very good clip of one of your songs, and has been showing it off to our friends and family, they are all curious about your band and I have been giving them your myspace.

I actually wanted to ask if you minded if I spotlight you on my new page, as one of my artists of the month? The page isn't built up all the way yet, but it should be some extra exposure none the less. I don't want to do it without your permission though ;)

It *was* Ethan's show. Not sure if she realized we weren't a duet/band, but friends playing a show together. Either way, it was a good time. Thanks to all y'all that came out!
