Now I gone and done it

I managed to piss off a bunch of Beth Ditto fans over on Jezebel.com by saying she'd be dead of a heart attack at 40. I also said it would be a waste of talent, but nobody got up-in-arms about that.

Instead, I got the standard knee-jerk reactions. Many of these were spot-on, like "well, that was pretty ugly of you to say" and such. Yeah, I could have been nicer about it. The rest were sarcastic and bitter, some going so far as to accuse me of being jealous of her. Oh, you guys... you got me. I can't sing, can't write, and haven't recorded a damn thing in my life. I am not nearly the goddess Miss Ditto is. I'm not even famous. Not even on the internet. I am a sad little person with no life of my own. Merrrrr.

I'll apologize when Ditto herself gets in my face demanding it. Something tells me that she doesn't give a rat's ass what some anonymous name on the internet thinks of her, and is well aware of the risks she's taking with her health. Live fast, die young, leave a good-looking corpse.

There are fat people who are healthy and there are fat people who are not. Beth Ditto is not a healthy fat person. She is a very talented woman with a powerful voice with the potential to have a long and amazing career. I hope to GOD I'm wrong about her fate. Time will tell.

Beth Ditto is an amazing talent. She's also obese and an outspoken member of the fat acceptance movement, an extreme response to the media's obsession with weight that I don't think is healthy.

If you're hanging out at MySpace, go check out Beth's work with The Gossip. She really is amazing. I just don't agree with her.

Of course my self-importance is showing! Duh - It's my blog. I put my name on what I write and I own it. My opinions are important to me. Obviously they are also important to you otherwise you wouldn't be here.

It's also obvious you don't know anything about me other than the one comment I posted and are too butthurt to bother learning more. My opinions on Beth Ditto are my own. It's not my problem if you disagree with them.

No offense intended, but I think both sides of the "fat debate" need to take a few step back. It's true that the media focuses excessively on skinny being beautiful, but the solution for that problem is not to glorify people who eat unhealthily and/or excessively, but to change people's perceptions so that healthy women come to prominence. And it's counterproductive to bash on all fat people just because they're fat, especially if it's not due to overeating. Frankly a lot of the arguments in the fat acceptance debate, both for and against, are really concealing people's biases and intolerance of anyone who is different.

I have no problem with adults who are fat (and in fact I support the idea of fat healthy people, or, preferably, Rubenesque), but when it starts with 6 year old children... it's just mind-bogglingly crazy.

Full disclosure: I am in the "mildly overweight" BMI category and need to work out at the gym and on my bike. I also like women who are not skinny.

I don't find this offensive at all. It's true. They do need to take a step back. The Fat Acceptance (FA) movement is just as blind to reality as any other overzealous social movement. Things get offensive when it stops being about accepting and loving oneself as they are and starts being about glorifying poor health. They don't see a difference between the two.
