Lunchtime Adventure Funland!
Wednesday, 22 October 2008 22:49From time to time I will have lunch with people I worked with back in '04. Since we got along on the job initially, and for the most part everyone parted ways friendly, it made sense to keep in touch. I look forward to these visits now. At first I was a little skeptical, but time has a way of mellowing things out.
One of these people is LQ, my former officemate at MS and Big G. She is now expecting a baby in January and is very exhausted and happy. Two of the menfolk we usually visit with have found girlfriends and married those girlfriends, and everyone knows my story already, so there's a lot to catch up on. Also, there's Chris, who is a big lug with a heart of gold gamer guy that joins us.
Today we had scheduled a lunch date at a restaurant in Bellevue at noon. There was some confusion with transportation -- one guy showed up at my office and we waited for a bit for Chris to arrive, but after half an hour he was a no-show, so we rushed to the restaurant, already late. On the way there Chris called me and apologized because his transport to my building got sabotaged. C'est la vie, better luck next time.
We're 20 minutes late. My car pulls up to the restaurant just a few minutes later and it is CLOSED. Not "it's a holiday, check back during business hours" closed, but "BUILDING FOR LEASE" closed. Uh-oh. My passenger laughed and we both said "oh shit" a lot. We had no idea how to get ahold of LQ to apologize and make another arrangement, and best I can remember she carries a mobile phone for emergencies only and wouldn't have it on anyway. I was so embarrassed. It was my turn to make the lunch plans and I screwed it up six ways from Sunday.
I called Chris to let him know that "everybody loses today" and he sent out an email. LQ was a little annoyed from what I could tell of her reply, but I'm sure she found lunch somewhere. I hope she did anyway, and will try to catch up with her in the next couple of weeks. Once the baby arrives I doubt she'll be up for visits.
My passenger and I ended up eating at a restaurant near the MS campus, where he encouraged me to make liberal use of the word "douchebag" when referring to my ex. "Seriously, try it -- it's very freeing!" I did, and he was right. It's not entirely accurate, I told him, but he said that didn't matter. "Everybody knows he's a douchebag but you, Wynne, so you might as well go with it. We'll all know who you're talking about." He had a lot of good news, and was excited about his recent wedding. We talked about a lot of things, and I encouraged him to bring his new bride to my show next week. It was a good lunch.
Although I might struggle with the whole "douchebag" thing for a while.
