She's Crafty (just my type)
Wednesday, 8 October 2008 17:23There is a half-inch gap under my front entryway doors. Grady loves this gap, especially if he can smell a trespasser through it. Me, not so much. It's not a consistent gap either. It's at its maximum width toward the center of the entry way, probably the result of replacing the old doors without updating the floor of the foyer. Personally, I don't really care if it's the original wood floor -- it's a mess, and I don't understand why they replaced the rest of the hardwood with Pergo only to leave the foyer alone.
Anyway, rants aside, I saw this project online (via LifeHacker) and decided it was necessary.
This is only half of the completed project. Since my entryway is two doors, and the gap is in the middle... well, you understand. I still have one more draft-blocker to go.

It's hard to tell in that first picture, but I managed to get the whole thing magnetized to the door using the method here. I bet you couldn't tell, couldja? That wasn't entirely on purpose. Here's a closer look.

Instead of colorful butterflies, I wanted a flower pattern. This was a bitch and a half. Butterflies would have been easier to cut out. I now have many tiny holes in my hands and fingertips from making sure all my metal disks had petals. As it turns out, metal curls as you cut it. I thought I'd be smarter than the metal. I was not.
I didn't think I'd be able to come up with a paint color that matched the door but decided I'd be happy with "close enough." I'm glad that "close enough" meant "right on" in this case. Unless you're really close to the door, you can't see the rust-colored metal flowers at ALL.

You know those sticky things that are supposed to save the paint on your walls by allowing you to pull a tab and s-t-r-e-t-c-h them off? I stuck those on the flowers first. They're made by 3M. After wiping the doors with Windex I placed the flowers on the door and attached my draft-blocker. Now when I close the door, I don't have to worry about kicking the darn thing back into place -- the magnets do it for me!

The metal for the flowers came from my extensive collection of tins that I plan to cover with paint/clay/decoupage someday. I knew those would come in handy eventually.
Now onto draft-blocker #2!
