DEAR CAT (pt 2)
Friday, 18 July 2008 10:42Grady has not eaten much since I left for my reunion last Friday. Sue and her daughter came by several times to check on him and make sure he had food, leaving me notes on his progress. When I got home on Sunday I realized I hadn't left any instructions for wet food, so he didn't get any. Whoops. I gave him some when I got in and figured some snuggling would make up for my mistake.
As I was unloading my bags and other things from my trip I noticed that Grady had gotten sick a few times. Great. Twice in the bedroom and once on the sofa. Thank gawd for slipcovers. I figured it would stop now that I'm home, but I was wrong.
Every day this week I have either woken up to it or come home to a mess to clean up. I have seen the kibble in his dish look nibbled on once. After two days of not eating the wet food I put out for him, I decided to wrap it up and stick it in the fridge. That shit's expensive. This morning, at approximately 5:20 a.m., just as I was feeling very happy to be asleep, it starts. I am so upset I start to cry.
I don't understand what is wrong with my cat, or why he vomits like clockwork -- especially when he's not eating and isn't lethargic or otherwise abnormal. I know I have been battling my own issues this week (post-party blues, driving fatigue, work, severe insomnia), but I've been through so much worse with this animal at my side and he has only behaved like this once since the day we first got him (moving did it).
I don't think the kibble is it. He was eating the kibble before I left. He wasn't eating a lot of it, but he was eating. He certainly wasn't upchucking it.
You know what cured him last time? A trip to the vet. The vet didn't give him anything, or find anything wrong with him. The process of taking him in the carrier to a place that looks clean but smells like a thousand scary things is what did it. They wanted to keep him overnight and x-ray him, but I said no. Last time I let that happen I was charged extra for injuries to the staff. I don't have the money for the vet. If he was exhibiting more symptoms, I would take him in a heartbeat, but all he's doing is not eating and kicking up the cling factor a few notches.
After this morning's event I was so angry I could barely get back to sleep. One of my biggest pet peeves is being woken up before my alarm goes off. I kicked Grady out of the bedroom and shut the door so I could attempt to salvage the remaining 45 minutes of sleep time. The only good thing that came out of that was that I actually got out of bed once I calmed down.
I'm not very fond of Grady right now. I'm also beginning to think I'm not a cat person, either.
