Tension

Last night's rehearsal was very productive. We worked on one new song that was already rather half-baked (we never really agreed on the arrangement) and came up with two new high-energy songs that I really hope I'm physically up to. One reminded me of U2, the other of Bjork. Who knows. I am not comparing myself to either. It's just what it reminded me of. I would like to do more songs like those we come up with off the cuff. Those are the moneymakers. I could do a whole record of those.

Compared to the rehearsal last week, this was a vast improvement. We were all pretty demoralized by Paul's departure, even though it was completely understandable why he backed out. That, plus the whole gas thing has had an impact. This week we played like we weren't expecting anyone else to join us. I think we're getting to a point where we're just going to have to consider a lead guitarist a luxury item, and rotate where we rehearse. Ron has a place to play, there's always Donnie's, and as long as we can find a slot at Evolution we'll go there.

On the way out Ed txted me asking "quick coffee?" I had carpooled in with Ron, so it wasn't possible. It was important enough for him to intercept me at Ron's car, though. That's what set me off into negativeland. If Ethan convinced Ed to drop this project I will hunt that fucker down and cut his manboobs off with a rusty spoon. Seriously -- that's just rude. Ed and I have been through a lot, and him remaining with the band isn't taking a lick of time away from his other projects. Ed will be hard to replace if he goes, and given the choice I would rather make this music than be a voice for hire in someone else's vision.

So I'm a little freaked out. Ron confessed that last week's rehearsal demoralized him so much he considered backing out as well, but it was short-lived. The project itself is slowing down and needs some structure. I can feel it but don't know what to do about it.

Ron has his own style, and he brings fresh life to our sound. I think it was he who strongly recommended bringing on a lead guitar to balance things out. We'll see. As we said goodbye last night he suggested I book a show so we'd have something to work toward. Without a goal, we'll collapse. I agree.

The Troublefakers, in all its craziness, has saved me from a gruesome end. If I can hold on just a little while longer I'll be okay.
