Crime Wave

Last night around 10:30 I heard a loud noise outside my house. It was very loud, so Grady and I both jumped up to the window to see what was going on. I have no idea what Grady saw, but I saw nothing. It was too dark.

This morning on my way to the bus stop I saw what it was. Someone had thrown a rock into the windshield of my neighbor's truck about the size of a baseball. It didn't make it through the glass, but my neighbor won't be able to drive his truck until he replaces it. On the next block was another truck with a damaged windshield, only this time the rock made it through. Turn the corner and there's a guy cleaning glass out of the equipment that was in the back of his SUV. This time it was the rear window, and ALL the glass was smashed out.

I stopped to talk to the SUV owner about it and point out that his was not the only car vandalized. "Oh well, you know kids." No, no I don't know kids. Is it a given now-a-days that if I park my car on the street a bored suburban teenager is going to throw a rock through my car window? What the fuck, man?

I'm just glad I park in my garage. Out of sight, out of mind.

I love the new attitude that's cropped up when things go wrong, "Oh well, what can you do?"

I catch myself doing it and just get pissed.

*sigh*

Hope someone calls the cops and they catch the little shits and scare the shit out of them. (And maybe a lesson will be learned.)

I wonder if it's a survival tactic developed by residents of certain densities of suburbia. I've never seen it before, to be honest. If this had happened in my dad's neighborhood there would be angry people hollering their irritation at at least two police cars and an insurance adjuster.

Here? "Meh."

I know kids. They just hang out in the driveway and make a lot of noise.

We didn't do shit like this for fun when we were kids. No way. We were too stoned to even think of vandalizing anything more than spray-painting a fence or making crank calls.
