I think the thing that shocks me the most is the incredulous statement made by the submitter that Marvin Gaye is not music you would fuck to. The sentiments are echoed in the comments.

Music has a HISTORY -- you can't get a music degree without learning it, and you can't make decent music without knowing it. Even Justin fucking Timberlake knows music history. He would probably fuck to Marvin Gaye (just ask Cameron). How can you possibly appreciate anything if all you live in is the here and now? People fought wars for what you have now. People struggled with discrimination and narrowmindedness for what you have now. Before there was techno, there was disco, and before disco was good ol' fashioned rock n' roll. Before THAT, people danced to big bands. OMG can you believe there was a time before television? And people used to watch movies on cassettes the size of a paperback novel?

I've said before that my interpretation of age has more to do with life experience and maturity than numbers. Is it age? or is it ignorance?

My fucking GOD, people... Marvin Gaye! Does no-one remember "Let's Get it On?"

One of the idiots with whom I used to share my office once said,

"Is Bob Marley even reggae? Or does he just sing with an accent?"

I almost stabbed him in the heart.

youth today have no understanding of musical history or appreciation. that's one of the things that KILLS me about music today. they think this crap on the radio is the end all be all and have no clue where music came from.

one recent example was my 19yo neice didn't know who CCR is - not cross-canadian-ragweed but creedence. she thought when people talked about CCR that it was the ragweed people.. um, no sweetie. she hadn't even heard a real CCR song.

one thing pandy will hopefully get from us is music appreciation. i grew up moaning about things we had to listen to and watch but as i got older i was greatful!

It's so weird to me that kids' parents don't make that kind of music history as much a part of their domestic education as washing your hands before eating and saying "please" and "thank you." I can't imagine my childhood without the sounds of my folks' adolescence: Bobby Darin, The Beatles... the stuff I heard then definitely influenced my musical tastes into adulthood.

Your niece needs to be edified! Get CCR's version of Grapevine over to her, stat!

Oh lord, that's painful. My sister is 25 and says she likes "oldies." When I ask her what she considers "oldies" she's pretty frank about it: "Eighties music." While the 80's was a pivotal time in music history, it's hardly what I'd consider old (but that's because I remember 20 years ago like it was yesterday).

I'm wondering if it isn't a good thing to use classic rock in commercials -- it may very well be the only way to expose our youth to it.

I'm all about music and all about it's history. Without people like cliché old Elvis or Ella Fitzgerald or something like The Sisters of Mercy, to go more recent, all my favourites would probably never have existed. Hell, my top band of the moment is over twenty years old. Music is a living thing and it's history can definitely not be denied.

So, no, it has nothing to do with age, 'cause I'm a baby when it comes to life. ;-)
