What we thought would be just some water and 30 years of misrouted dryer lint turned out to be much more. The crawlspace has endured water and vermin, as well as substantial damage to the ventilation ducts. The past owners' solution? Put down more moisture barrier over the existing, yet adequate, mosture barrier.

I was not at home while the experts worked their magic, but Garret was. He said that it must have been awful, because he kept hearing little outbursts like "oh my god!" and "yuck!" as they discovered more and more hidden water (among other things). All I could think was how much they must have gone through -- I have no idea how long they were down there, but going down there at all, even if it were a perfect crawlspace, is enough for me to be extremely grateful. My claustrophobia keeps me in a happy state of denial about what could possibly be beneath my house.

So... All the interesting revelations about the crawlspace have set us back a little. We still have to figure out how to re-route the dryer vent, fix the seeping hot water valve under the kitchen sink, replace the inadequate refrigerator and washer/dryer, and find time to unpack. There's still a bunch of things we don't even know we'll need until we unpack. Did I mention there are no shelves in the lower kitchen cabinets? We have a kitchen cabinet that is very deep but only has one door. It is unlikely we will be able to put a door on the other side of the space, so I need to figure out a carousel or something.

I am immersed. Slowly I'm a little more excited about owning a home. If only I could find a renter for that condo, though...

sounds like you need a trip to ikea or some other store that sells lots of kitchen cabinet stuff for your shelves. going from renting to owning is a big shock - the sticker shock of all the things you have to replace/fix/keep up with.. but in the end as you get settled its so worth it..

What I ended up doing was going to Home Depot and ordering a slide-out wooden shelf for one of my cabinets. I originally went there to see if I could get a custom shelf that came all the way to the door, but was informed that the cabinetry we had was rather low-end and didn't offer one.

I just really want to be settled. I'm looking forward to that and not seeing a bunch of half-emptied boxes when I get home every day. Having things on the walls would be nice, too.
