New band?

I'm stretching myself out a bit thin these days musically. The jam group I found through work is a lot of fun and I'm meeting some cool people. Unfortunately, I'm overworking my voice a bit. I don't understand how I'm doing that. I'm only singing for an hour -- I shouldn't be so sore afterwards. I enjoy singing the songs in the "hymnal," and am struggling to find new ones to add to it (as I've been encouraged to do), but the vocal hygiene thing still eludes me. I need to rest my voice for a while and get a good coach -- fast.

I met with some guys yesterday to see how a new band (sorry, locked post) would work out, and there's some potential there. For a first meeting where all we have are bits and pieces I think we did pretty well. Without effects & pedals everything sounded very Rockabilly, but I wasn't too worried about that. If it becomes Rockabilly, then I'll get some highly visible tattoos, dress up in vintage gingham and shitkickers, and go right to town. The Show Must Go On. We have at least five original songs that just need to be arranged and cleaned up, and two more in development (already!) The next step is agreeing on covers, because those will get us gigs. I think we're going for obscure ones. You know, to be different.

Garret re-stringed his stratocaster last weekend, and left me to tune it. Yay. The high-E string was so poorly wound around the peg it flew off half a turn from hitting the tone. Shit. This is my greatest fear regarding guitars, that I'll be tuning a string and it will either break or fly off and put my damn eye out. I still have my eyes, but it freaked me out anyway.

I hear you! I start to lose my voice after singing for half an hour, no joke. After an hour of singing, I'm really hoarse. I'm worried I'm going to do some damage. I guess I need a vocal coach too...and I also am afraid of blindness by guitar - I have been known to cover my eyes with one hand whilst winding a particularly dogdy string with the other. I hope the band thing works out. Sounds promising.

Here's the wierd thing: I never had a problem with my voice until I got married. Wedding planning did a huge number on my vocal chords (through reflux and stress) and they've rarely been the same. For the most part, I can keep it under control with meds, but lately it's like I'm using my voice ALL the TIME and it never gets any rest. Oy.
