Pan's Labyrinth
"Pan's Labyrinth" on Google Video
Spain, 1944. The end of the Civil War.

Recently remarried Carmen moves with her daughter Ofélia into the house of her new husband, coldly authoritarian Vidal, a captain in Franco’s army. Finding her new life hard to bear, the young girl seeks refuge in a mysterious labyrinth she discovers next to the sprawling family house. Pan, the guardian, a magical creature, reveals that she is none other than the long-lost princess of a magical kingdom. To discover the truth, Ofélia will have to accomplish three dangerous tasks, tasks which nothing has prepared her to face…

Written and directed by Guillermo Del Toro.

I have seen this film. Don't ask how, but I did. It's brilliant and I recommend it to anyone. There are a couple of scenes that were slightly gory, as the antagonist is a sadistic and cold fascist and war is hell. Not for small children. In the US it would probably be PG-13. Spanish, subtitled in English.

It's a pain in the ass to rent movies in Palm Springs as there's not a video store nearby, so we decided to take a chance on a rental kiosk at the Von's down the street. Simple, convenient, and I got to see a handful of flix I normally wouldn't bother with because I'm strange about movies.

We saw:
The Devil Wears Prada
My Super Ex-Girlfriend
Little Miss Sunshine
X-Men 3 (I saw it in the theater, but Garret hadn't)
Lady in the Water
Click

Little Miss Sunshine is a must see, I liked Click and Devil much more than I thought I would, Lady was predictably M Night Shamalamamamamamaya, and I could have done without Super Ex (even Eddie Izzard couldn't save it, but he tried).
