We're having dinner at Garret's brother's, because neither one of the boys wanted to pay money for the Argosy cruise L wanted us all to go on. Never realized what a pain in the ass it would be to get Garret to actually do his part.

I wanted to bring a dessert. Desserts are my thing -- I love to experiment, and I love to follow a good recipe and add a little something to it. My desserts are always a great hit. So when I got the email from Nate with the dish assignments I was very disappointed at mine: veggie tray.

Veggie tray? What, I go to Costco and spend $15 on a friggin' no-effort case of plastic with dried-out carrots and veggies that most of the family won't bother touching? This would not do. Besides, I still have a lot of veggies in my fridge due to our South Beach Diet thing. The only thing I'd need to buy is carrots.

I'm going to bring a sorbet anyway. Goddammit, it's my friggin' speciality.

Garret, on the other hand, was assigned mashed potatoes. WTF???? When we asked Nate, he said "well, you have the [Kitchenaid] mixer..." I bought the potatoes last night (about a dozen russets) at 6. He didn't start peeling them until just before midnight and I wasn't about to do it for him. We ended up at 1 a.m. with a huge pot full of peeled and chunked potatoes we couldn't do anything about because he was too tired to try and cook it. Well, any progress is something I should be thankful for, I guess. They soaked in water overnight with a little vinegar to keep the nutrients from leeching out completely.

With his arthritis, it takes a few hours for Garret to get up and about in the morning. He won't get to the rest of potato-mashing until at least 1, and dinner is at 4:30. We need to get there early, because I'm bringing the friggin' veggie tray (which, by the way, I got done last night except for the things that dry out quickly, like celery and carrots). I'll start on the sorbet first thing...

...after my annual Thanksgiving workout. I do this every year, whether I'm active in going to the gym or not. This year I'm in a two-month lull, so I am looking forward to getting back and kick-starting my heart before a big stressful day with family.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. May your main dish turn out the way you intended.
