fatrockstar: (WTF?)

Grady has a cold. I'm not feeling so hot either. This reminds me: I need to get my water bottle and take some vitamins.

Last night Garret attended the MS Zune launch party in Seattle and didn't get home until about 12:30 a.m. or so. By that time I was already in bed -- I've been sleeping in a lot and missing out on a huge chunk of my days and have been trying to reset my clock -- but he was full of excitement and stories and wanted to tell me all about it. As a result of our conversation I was up for another hour.

My old MS contract agency and I have rekindled our working relationship, and I'm not sure I'm happy about it. It's pretty standard for recruiters to not grok my resume and ask me for a chronological one, so I prepared a confidential chrono-CV just for them. I make it very clear it is not for distribution. This particular recruiter ignored all that and asked if she could distribute it instead of the "unstructured" one. I told her on no uncertain terms NO, and she gave me the song & dance most recruiters have about my resume, which I interrupted.

"The resume you want me to give you is not the resume that will get me the job I want. I spent a lot of time and money working with senior managers at Microsoft and through my ATW network to fine-tune this resume into a career changer. I'm not going to make the changes you want because I'm not a tester anymore -- I'm a manager."

So the next email I get is from another recruiter in the same agency wanting to submit my resume for an STE4 position, describing it as "a test lead position without the title." I shot that down right away. I've been acting as a test lead for the last five years without a title -- why on earth would I want to continue to do so? "But it's considered a test lead position," she insisted. "Sorry, but if responsibility was a bigger indicator on my resume of advancement than the job title, I'd agree with you. But nobody looks at responsibility when looking for a suitable management candidate. I'm experiencing that RIGHT NOW." No further questions, your honor.

This whole thing is frustrating. What I need is to figure out how to NOT apply for jobs listed by an agency, because recruiters are not the filter I want to deal with when it comes to this point in my career. I have a couple of companies in mind, but they already have my resume or I've already interviewed with them. I just gotta keep on keepin' on.
