Random Acts of Thoughtlessness
Tuesday, 17 July 2007 16:13If you have a special filter just for those you trust not to post Harry Potter spoilers you can safely add me to it. I've only read the first book, and even though it was great, I opted out of reading any of the others. In time I might, but I'm not that excited. For as long as I've been on LiveJournal there have been HP spoilers. I got upset at the first ones and then quickly realized how easily I forgot them. It helps to not be as absorbed with the characters and storylines. The series is a classic. I'll enjoy them with my children.

On my adventures out this weekend I was driving down 522 and nearly cut the nose off a tan camry attempting to make a left turn. Why? 522 is four-lane, and a car in the other South-bound lane had stopped to let her through without thinking. I realize he was trying to be nice, but that practice is fucking dangerous. The cars behind the stopped one were piling up and blocking the other lane's view of what was happening, so the turning car could have easily been t-boned by someone going the speed limit. I don't take those favors from other drivers when I need to make a left across more than one lane, and those drivers that insist on it will be ignored. They can flip me off or honk all they like. I'm not going to risk a collision. I'm perfectly capable of making a left turn safely and without your help, thankyouverymuch.
It got me to thinking about some of the other stupid things people do. Garret had changed the Sirius channel to 27, and the "punk" soundtrack took me back to the days where I would share a house or duplex with other people my age -- usually students.
The thing that sticks out the most is how to split the rent. If you have four people in a house and four bedrooms the split is pretty easy -- 25%. If you have five people in a four bedroom house, some kids think it's okay to still split the rent four ways, but the two that share a bedroom split expenses between them. Feel free to disagree with me, but that's far from fair. Yeah, you're sharing a bedroom with one other person, but you're still sharing the kitchen, the bathrooms, the electricity, the water, and the cable with four other people. Why should you and your bff only pay 12.5% when everybody else has to pay 25?
I experienced this twice in my early 20's. Once it went on behind the backs of the rest of the housemates, and again when I was looking for a fourth roommate in a rooming house a year later. The girl calling for the room told me her plan to split her quarter with her friend and I flat out said no. "But we're sharing a room," she insisted. "Then rent a one-bedroom and split that. Nobody else in this house is going to let you get away with less than an equal share of the rent." She huffed at me before hanging up. I don't know why. 20% is less than 25% any day of the week.
