Nostalgia

I hate Classmates.com. It's pretty much useless for anything except letting people know you have an internet connection and can type your name. It used to not be that way. Over the years it has become that, though. If you put your email address in your public profile, or some other URL for people to reach you, Classmates.com will obscure it so that anyone who truly wants to contact you will have to pay $15. To them.

Over the last few years I've been "tagged," "poked," "commented," and had email sent to me from people who were curious enough to make the effort. One gave me his work email address and I wrote back immediately. I never heard back from him, probably because his work email blocks my domain. One of my ex-boyfriends wrote me IN ALL CAPS and I couldn't bring myself to reply.

Since then I've had comments and private messages sent to me via my classmates.com address but was only able to read one of them before they decided that should be paid for, too. It's probably for the best, though. The message was from a guy I made out with my sophomore year who rode a Yamaha Rebel and wanted me to put out because "Charlie Wall said y'all did it, we should, too!" Oh yeah, that'll convince me. At least he aged well.

So last month I got an email from an old friend from my third (and final) high school. I just now got around to writing her back. What do I say? I can't remember why we grew apart, but it might have had something to do with my focus on getting the hell out of my hometown and separating myself from the mindset of the people who lived there. I can't remember much of anything from that era anymore, and it's not because I burned through it at a Grateful Dead concert. I don't think I'm anywhere near the same person anymore, and I'm not sure that's a bad thing.
