Short and sweet?
Monday, 14 May 2007 22:36My officemate has caught on to the fact that I'm not up for a lot of chattyness. My best guess is that he's just a friendly person with a dull job and can afford to carry on a conversation while he's working. I am not one of those people. While I can multitask I prefer not to. I get sloppy if I juggle too many things at once.
Unfortunately he hasn't completely embraced the idea of not using his speakers. Why anyone uses speakers in a shared workspace is beyond me. I've found headphones to be a great way to listen to my music while nonverbally communicating that I do not want to be disturbed. If I don't have my own music going in my ears, I have to listen to the thumpa-thumpa-thumpa of techno at a volume not quite low enough for me to ignore. I should probably say something to him. Once in a while I'd like to work in a quiet office. I'd also like the door to be left open and the blinds where I can see through them. I'm not one to like being trapped in a sealed box.
The work is going well. I'm worried that I'm not doing it right, but I have to give myself room to fail if I'm going to learn anything. And for fuck's sake, if my boss doesn't crack a smile at my jokes once in a while I'm going to fart in his goddamn office. What is it with the Swedes that sucks them of laughter? He seems nice enough and all, but... Jeebus.
