The world is a magical place
Wednesday, 21 February 2007 13:56Several years ago, as I was struggling to find a sense of spiritual community, I attended a Spring Mysteries Festival hosted by the Aquarian Tabernacle Church. It was at this event that I witnessed the following exchange:
Woman 1: [digging in her purse] Shit, I can't find my lighter -- reach for yours, will you?
[Woman 2 reaches into her coat pocket for a lighter]
Woman 1: A-ha! Found it! Thanks, hon.
Woman 2: Anytime.
A little practical magic at work. I use this tactic when I can't find something easily. I will get Garret up out of his chair and have him "search" with me. 9 times out of 10 I will find what I am looking for less than a minute later. He'll complain about having to get up, but it sure beats having me search fruitlessly for an hour, tearing up our home in the process.
I bring this up because I have this knack for finding jobs when I am about to travel. My last decision to travel was in October 2005 to a family reunion (the Palm Springs trip doesn't count because I didn't book it and really wasn't gung-ho about going to begin with). At that time I had interviewed at Big G and was waiting for them to make an offer. They took their sweet time doing so, and ended up making the offer while I was incommunicado in New Mexico. I almost missed it.
Last night I booked a birthday trip to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, to visit my cousin Nathan and his girlfriend Kim. I was a little nervous. I envisioned being asked to interview the morning I was scheduled to get on the plane, or being asked to start a job the Monday before I left. Garret laughed my concern off. It's not like they can rescind the offer because I already booked a few days out-of-town with my family.
Sure enough, I get two phone calls this morning. One from an agency I've never heard of before and another from a recruiter I spoke to over a month ago that seemed friendly. One just wanted to know if I was still looking for work, and the other one wanted to submit my resume. Good luck, crazy timing.
I'll make it work. I always do. I'm just amused that it took booking a flight out of town to give my job search some new life.
