THAW

That whole cooler thing I was doing in my last post? Yeah... about that...

I put the cooler and the thermometer probe outside on the back porch with the alarm set to 38 degrees. It was fine. I put the alarm inside and shut the door gently. No worries.

At 5:30 a.m. the alarm went off. I had not fallen asleep until about 2, so I was groggy and disoriented. I was very concerned about the safety of this turkey and just wanted to change out the ice packs and be done. Unfortunately this would not be the case.

I turned on the light and the temp gage said 104 degrees! What? I freaked out and threw the door open and struggled, still groggy, to get the cooler back inside to see what the hell could have happened. It was 40 degrees outside, there was no way the cooler could have become so warm. I opened the cooler to find the turkey still frozen along with all the still-frozen ice packs around it.

Apparently I had done something to the thermometer probe when I closed it in the door. I was still half-asleep and getting really really angry and frustrated about the whole thing. I had no room in the fridge, no patience, and no ideas. After a short hissyfit I emptied out a shelf and found room in the fridge for that damn bird, where it's been defrosting peacefully for the last 24+ hours.

Next time I get the bright idea to host Thanksgiving, I'm serving a prime rib roast or ordering a pre-cooked turkey. This is just too much hassle.
