Katrina robbed my uncle
Thursday, 1 September 2005 19:25I had an uncle in Bay St. Louis, MS. BSL, MS, is located not too far East of NOLA and not too far West of Biloxi, MS. My uncle's house was less than ten blocks from the water. Now it's gone, along with my grandmother's baby grand piano and about 90% of the Chandler family archives. Back when Ivan hit, I was worried about my uncle and his family, but was told "aw, that house is 150 years old and survived Camille -- I'll be fine." And it was.
My uncle is no longer in BSL. He evacuated several days before to Pensacola, FL, a locale that only got a purple-nurple compared to the beating the mouth of the Mississippi River and its neighbors got. He's safe, but homeless. I imagine he's with friends, otherwise I'm sure he would have picked somewhere else besides Pensa-fucking-cola to ride out the storm... Oh, lordy.
Pardon my irritation here, I'm just overwhelmed by the anarchy and chaos the news is reporting on the aftermath.
I will most likely send money and goods directly to my uncle instead of donating to Red Cross. He's a good man, and I love him to death. It's only natural I'd want to take care of my own family first.
