Charlotte and I calmed down long enough to go through some boxes labeled "Lynne's Clothes 1990."

It's amazing what my mother acquired in her lifetime. She was always hoping to have a career in fashion, maybe to be a buyer for a major department store or a fashion consultant. During her working years she was in the employ of several major department stores and used her employee discount liberally.

Charlotte didn't recognize ANY of what we pulled out of those boxes, but I did. I recognized the mumu-type zippered housedress she made out of this satiny polyester material that was dove-patterned. I used to play dressup with it until I realized that the armholes were so big that you could see under it. There are only a couple of stains on it, could probably be salvaged. The dress she wore in the black and white photos her best college friend took of her in 1978 is down there too. It really made me think. I ended up sharing a lot of stories with Charlotte about those items and more. Nothing has been thrown out entirely yet (garbage day is Monday), but it is bagged.

I don't think I'll be taking home a lot. Maybe a handful of items, like baby clothes or one other thing that has an archival quality to it. I really wish I wasn't going through any of it, but this is part of a process. It has to be done. I need to remember my mother as she was before she went crazy.
