Tales from the Storage Locker: Days of the Cassette

I found this case as I was going through my extra boxes. I don't think I've opened it in ten years, and certainly not since I replaced the stereo in my car with a cd player. Carry cases like this are definitely relics now, but I remember how important they were during Cassette Days.

Not all cases were created equal, either. Some were designed in such a way that if you didn't put the case in just right it would stick out or break. My dad had an awesome hard case for his. I coveted it.

I only have one cassette player now, and it's in my kitchen. I listened to Duran Duran a few days ago and it took me back quite a ways. A mix tape took me back to my first semester at WSU. I found a homemade case sleeve that took me to the summer of '87 with my first live-in boyfriend.

What are your Cassette Days memories?

great mix tapes, local band tapes (i still have several from my highschool ND times), homemade covers..recording the radio... sometimes the old times were so much better :)

Recording the radio was always so frustrating -- every DJ on the planet had to talk over the intro AND the outro, so it was tough to get anything clean.

There are some songs I can't hear today without also hearing (in my mind) the spots where the tapes would blip a little, or where the radio DJ would talk, or the beginning of the next song the radio was playing...

I love the advances we've seen in audio and video and gaming consoles... but pawing through relics and remembering the old days is just wonderful and magical to me.
